Shaper's Parts and Preparation for Personal Assistants

Organics:
1 bear stomach
1 dog heart
3 whole rats
1 lb. chicken feet
.5 lb. goose beaks
1 human bladder
2 giant's thumbs
1 human eye
2 frog eyes
3 chicken eyes
1 cat eye
1 turtle eye
1 palm full of teeth
5 full frog skins
1 lb. assorted insect parts
2 qt. goat blood
1 qt. bull bile
5 oz. human aqueous humor
1 chicken lung
3 pounds of veins, arteries, similar fleshy tubes
4 oz. hog phlegm
2 oz. sunflower peddles

Non Organics:
3 lb. copper
25 carpenter's nails
1 oz. gold
3 oz. crushed quartz
1 lb. salt
6 oz. sulfur
4 oz. wood ash
14 stone marbles

Special:
3 oz. tears of the dying
8 oz. glass
1 deer skin
1 lb. mint leaves

Mix all non organic components together in a large bowl. Let sit overnight in the night air for 3 consecutive nights. Each night at the stroke of midnight sprinkle 1 oz. of the tears of the dying over the bowl. Pour blood and bile into bowl at first sunrise following the third night. Let sit and wait for 5 days. If at any time the mixture moves dose with boiling water.

On the second day of waiting, place eyes, aqueous humor, phlegm, and glass into bladder and sew shut. Put this in cool dark place for 3 days.

On the fourth day of waiting take remaining organic components and make a small pile in the center of the inside of the deer skin. Place damp cloth over the pile and set it near a hearth or fireplace for 1 day.

Once the 5 days of waiting has ended scrap the contents of the large bowl onto the pile of organic components in the middle of the deer skin. The non organic components should now be a gelatinous mass that is easy to shape and mold. Work the mass over all of the organic components making sure everything is covered thoroughly. Dump the mint leaves over the mass making sure that as much of the surface is covered in the leaves. Take the bladder and place it on top of the mass. Sew up the deer skin as tightly as possible leaving litter to no space around the mass. Make sure there are no leaks. If leaking occurs use tar to seal the breach.

Place deer skin into a lower incubation chamber of an egg for 1 week or until the deer skin has lost all of its fur and has turned completely black. Once removed from the egg carefully cut the deer skin open. The new personal assistant will begin to move and emit smoke within a few moments of coming into contact with the air. If it fails to move, press firmly on its body until smoke is emitted.

Corrupted Knight - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

Corrupted Knight
9 x 12 - Pencil on paper
© 2014 Christopher Burdett

"Many of our brave and honorable knights have ventured deep into the dungeons beneath the Bazaar to seek out the darkness that dwells there and purge it from our blessed realm. Many of our knights have gone forth and many of our knights have never returned. What does return is a mockery of life, a mockery of our Gods. When the clothes and armor of our sacred knights return it is not worn by beings of faith, but by horrid abominations born from whatever evil lurks deep beneath our feet. To the reason why these ghastly piles of oozing flesh need to adorn themselves with the armor of our knights has yet to be determined. Maybe the armor is part of some demonic ritual, seeing that the armor is often warped and shifted to suit these misshapen beasts. Perhaps they mean to undermine our resolve and faith by reminding us of those who have sacrificed all for the temple. Whatever the reason, such blasphemy can not be tolerated. I have asked the High Scholars to put forth a doctrine proposal to begin killing and burning any creature found wearing the armor of the Knights of Ascension. While the proposal is still working its way through the consideration committees, I am optimistic that it will be accepted and implemented. We can not allow for the good deeds and noble sacrifices of our knight to be corrupted by such monsters. For too long the Order has tried to glean knowledge of these monster's origin and reasoning. Some of the High Scholars even hope to communicate with these monsters, learn from them, which of course is pure folly. We give time to this threat the longer we allow them to walk the streets at night stalking the weak. We must act now to cleanse them from our world lest they endanger the purity of our temple. All those that were volunteered to seek out the darkness would want this. They would never want to have their deeds tarnished in this way, to have their sacrifice spit upon by such foul creatures."

Lammergeier Transport - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

Lammergeier Transport
11 x 14 - Pencil on paper
© 2017 Christopher Burdett

"You have never truly eaten an egg until you have tasted the velvety decadence that is a freshly cooked Lammergeier egg. It practically melts in the mouth as if it was simply made of butter. Just thinking of its texture and flavor sends my mouth to water. A worldly man's breakfast is not complete without 3 fired tomatoes, a steamed radish, 7 strips of bacon (not too crispy), 3 shots of whiskey, and a Lammergeier egg, server yoke up of course.
I remember fondly that morning in the Bazaar, so many years ago, when I tasted my very first Lammergeier egg. I was but a young man, and at the time barely even an Acolyte, my Seer took me under his wing, literally, and opened up a magnificent culinary world to me that changed how I will forever look at food. That morning while dining on my first Lammergeier egg I found myself drunk from the pleasure that was this egg. Mind you, I had not even tasted the whiskey for I was not yet a drinker. Like I said, it was a very long time ago and I was a young man, well, more of a boy really. There I sat, feasting on this most intoxicating ambrosia as I listened to the heartbeat of feet, voices, and machinery that is very life's breath of the Bazaar. I was forever changed that morning and my Seer knew it too. I could see it in his many eyes that he had forever changed me with this one egg. I have gone on to share that experience with all of my Acolytes. When the time is right, I will sit them down and server them a Lammergeier egg. As they eat I look into their eyes and wait for that moment of change, that moment when mind and stomach become one, when they realize they were tasting something purely special. It does not happen with all of them. Some beings find the egg unpalatable, while others refuse to eat due to religious or cultural concerns, or they refuse because they themselves came from an egg, but for those that taste the Lammergeier egg and realize its magnificence, they are forever changed.
It is unfortunate that the price of a Lammergeier egg is so expensive these days. It seems like each year the price is more and more. It is as if the egg mongers are just raising the price to see at which point we will break. Not too mention that it is getting harder and harder to find a merchant who will even carry Lammergeier eggs. Sadly, I can barely afford to have one egg a week these days. Which is of course a great shame. It is the little things that bring such pleasure to life, a fine drink, a good story from an old friend, and a Lammergeier egg. When the pleasures in life or gone you begin to feel the progress of time and the weight of all those years upon your shoulders.
All this talk of Lammergeier eggs does stir the mind and the stomach. I think I might be decadent and stop by the egg mongers this afternoon to get an egg to have as my dinner. Wouldn't that be just wicked, a Lammergeier egg for dinner."

Full Illuxcon Portfolio Video

I recently shared all of the preparations for the debut of The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia at Illuxcon. This included a teaser video of the portfolio I put together containing all of my original drawings. Now that Illuxcon has come and gone I have a full video that shows off every page of the portfolio! Each drawing had a corresponding name plate page that reflects the monster. It was well received at Illuxcon and I am pressing forward with new monsters!

The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia at Illuxcon

This coming weekend, October 20-21, the inhabitants of The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia will be invading the Illuxcon 2017 Showcase! For the first time all of the original illustrations will be in one place and available for viewing. To mark this occasion my table in the showcase will be decked out with brand a new table runner and related signage. This will be the first time Ethra VanDalia will be stepping out into the world and it needs to be done right. Here is a look at the table runner...

Table runner emblazoned with the symbol of Ethra VanDalia.

Those in attendance will have the chance to sign up for the mailing list at the table and will get their hands on the new announcement postcard. Featuring the symbol of Ethra VanDalia it has all the relevant links to stay up to date on what is happening at the Grand Bazaar. If you are reading this, then you already know where you need to be to get the latest news on the Grand Bazaar. If you can't make it here is a look at the postcard...

Announcement postcard with all the relevant websites and links.

As mentioned above all of the original illustrations from The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia (minus the 3 that have already sold) will all be together for public viewing. The portfolio has been customized to feature the monster's name and there might be a clue or two about the monster for those that look close enough. I have also built a custom display stand to elevate (both figuratively and literally) the portfolio so that it will be easier to be viewed and I think it looks a lot more classy. Here is a look at one of the spreads of the portfolio on the stand, and it just so happens to be Ethra VanDalia...

Portfolio featuring all of the current original drawings on a custom built stand.

Last, but certainly not least, here is an exclusive preview of the portfolio! Have a little look as I flip through some of the pages. After Illuxcon I will share a look at every page! If you are attending Illuxcon the monster are eager to meet you, if can't attend, I will leave you with the preview...

Teaser flip through of the portfolio that will be debuted at Illuxcon.
(This video is acting a little weird over on Blogger, head on over to YouTube to watch it clearly!)

Gray Wanderer - The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia

Gray Wanderer
9 x 12 - Pencil on paper
© 2014 Christopher Burdett
"The Gray Wanderer remains one of the biggest mysteries of the Bazaar. While there are many theories as to what the Gray Wander is and to why it only appears at night in the oldest parts of the Bazaar, there has yet to be any substantial evidence to prove these theories, let alone give any definitive insight into its origins. Sightings of the Gray Wanderer date back at least fifteen hundred years, but I am certain I could find evidence of even older sightings if I had access to the Vaults of Advertence. I would speculate that the Gray Wanderer may be far older then we would ever imagine and may be as old as the Bazaar itself. As of yet I have no evidence for this, save my intuition on these matters.
The general consensus is that the Gray Wanderer is a ghost or similar malevolent spirit, but this does not explain many of the eye witness accounts regarding its actions and behaviors. There are countless records of the Gray Wanderer simply wandering up and down the streets seeming to browse the store fronts. The Gray Wanderer is said to inspect the various goods for sale, almost as if it is trying to understand the items or ascertain their purpose. This is not the general behavior of the ghost population of the Bazaar. The physical appearance described in the witness statements also does not align with any ghost or specter on record. Comparing the records from the last hundred years, the Gray Wanderer is described as: (1) being in the range of 8-10 foot units in height, (2) tentacled in face, hands, and possibly body, (3) cloaked or shrouded in layers of well worn fabric, (4) carries a lamp of magical or animal nature, (5) consorts with a bird, or similar creature, that never leaves the Gray Wanderers shoulder, and (6) adorned with many talismans, bobbles, and chains which, combined with its awkward gait, gives it a singular sound as it walks. Some have described the approach of the Gray Wanderer as being heralded with the chimes of your own coffin nails. I find this description overly dramatic and plays into the fear centered around the Gray Wanderer.
While it is true the Gray Wanderer has killed, I have found in all but one or two instances that the victim was the first to strike. Stranger still, in most situations where the Gray Wanderer has slain an individual it has returned life to the dead body. Not only does the Gray Wanderer restore any damage done by its deathblow but it often cures unrelated disease and illness that the individual had in life. These actions and abilities go well beyond that of any ghost or specter cataloged. There are reports of the Gray Wanderer appearing and vanishing into thin air, but as there are any number of ways to cause this, to use this to conclude that the Gray Wander is simply a ghost is without logic.
My findings rule out the Gray Wanderer being a ghost and suggest that we are dealing with something that is unique, extremely powerful, and vastly older than previously imagined."

The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia!

Welcome to The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia! If you are familiar with my work or if you follow my main blog, then you might be familiar with The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia. If not, let me introduce you to the world I am creating.

The Grand Bazaar is just that, a massive city sized marketplace created by the being known as Ethra VanDalia. The Grand Bazaar has existed for thousands of years and is inhabited by monsters and creatures who sell their wares, do business, and otherwise live their lives in the ever expanding warren of shops, towers, and dungeons. Every monster has a story and I plan to use The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia to tell them all.

This is an ongoing project and is very much in production. When I have created all of the art, written all of the stories, and have it all completed I will be bringing it to Kickstarter to help fund the project as a book. I have a lot planned and I hope that you will join me in this endeavor to see it a reality.

While I will be able to find updates of my progress on my main blog, this blog will be used exclusively to share the monsters already created, the monsters I am currently working on, and updates on the entire project as things advance. I plan to also share exclusives and sneak peeks of things in production that you will not be able to find anywhere else. In addition, the content on this blog will be presented in a similar fashion to what you will eventually see the final book, so you will be introduced to characters, places, and aspects of the Grand Bazaar. You won't learn all the secrets, but you definitely get a glimpse of what awaits for you at the Grand Bazaar.

Simply put, this will be the place to get all the details and information on The Grand Bazaar of Ethra VanDalia!
